Personal Development/British Values

The school prepares learners for life in modern Britain by:

  • equipping them to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society
  • developing their understanding of fundamental British values and appreciation of diversity
  • celebrating what we have in common and promoting respect for each other

Protected Characteristics;

The national curriculum recognises how important it is for children to understand the world in which they live in. They want children to live alongside and show respect for a diverse range of people. A way in which schools can ensure they are providing children with the knowledge and skills to do this is through the teaching of protected characteristics.

It is extremely important for us here at Roydon Primary Academy, that our children grow to be respectful, ambitious and empathetic pupils who respect the world in which they live in.

The 9 protected characteristics are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

The government does stress that not all of these characteristics have to be taught about in every year group and schools should use their professional judgement to plan their curriculum appropriately.

British Values are very important to us here at Roydon Primary Academy. We are dedicated to the teaching of British Values through our curriculum and wider school life. We believe we have created an environment that shows respect and tolerance for all. British Values are underpinned in everything we do at Roydon Primary Academy.

Prevent

From July 2015, the government made it mandatory for schools to protect children against radicalisation and extremism. The government initiative, known as the 'prevent duty' means school have a duty of care to not only protect children against radicalisation and extremism, but also, identify children in their care who may be vulnerable to this and know how to act when they are identified.

All staff at Roydon Primary Academy receive training regularly on Prevent. This is a government provided programme that each member of staff complete. In addition to this, we promote positive attitudes and resilience to radicalisation through the teaching of our British Values.

Further information on Prevent can be found on the website below:
