Ofsted says Roydon is Good

Posted: 27th February 2019

Roydon Primary Academy is a Good school, Ofsted has confirmed.

Inspectors paid their first visit to the school in February since it was judged to be Good in July 2015.

In a letter to headteacher Michael Clark, Her Majesty’s inspector Wendy Varney confirmed the school continues to be Good.

She said: “Roydon is a friendly, happy school that staff enjoy working at and pupils enjoy coming to. Parents are very positive about the school and how well their children are looked after.”

Improvements since the last inspection were noted, including a change in the way writing is taught resulting in a “positive impact on improving outcomes in writing”.

The inspector was happy the headteacher had a “thorough and accurate” understanding of the school’s strengths and weaknesses and said: “Leaders are ambitious for the school, its pupils and staff. You and the deputy headteacher have high expectations, and you lead by example. As a result, the school is improving well.”

Headteacher Michael Clark said: “We, as a school, are extremely happy with the report. It was reassuring that the inspector acknowledged all the fantastic work that has happened over the past two years and could see what a strong position we are in. Roydon will continue to go from strength to strength.

“Roydon is a happy community with parents, children and staff all working together to ensure the children get the best quality education in a happy and safe environment and this is reflected in the report.

“I am thankful to all the staff who work incredibly hard, the parents for their amazing support and our wonderful children who work so hard.”

The school’s close working relationship with its multi-academy trust BMAT was said to be working “very well” and “helping the school to improve”. The inspector observed: “Support from other headteachers in the trust, and from the trust’s central team, is only ever a phone call away.

“The trust’s chief executive officer (Helena Mills) is your line manager and meets with you regularly. All of this means you and the deputy headteacher are both supported well and held closely to account.”
