Mathematics
At Roydon Primary Academy, we are passionate about mathematics and its power to unlock potential.
We believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in maths, and we are committed to building a deep, lasting understanding of the subject from the very beginning. Our aim is to develop confident, curious learners who see mathematics not just as a school subject, but as an essential tool for understanding and engaging with the world.
Through carefully structured lessons, we equip pupils with a wide range of strategies to solve problems creatively and logically. We nurture lively, enquiring minds, encouraging children to become resilient, independent thinkers who are excited by challenge and confident in their abilities.
A cornerstone of our approach is the focus on mastery, ensuring that every new concept is introduced using hands-on materials, before progressing to visual representations and, ultimately, abstract thinking. It lays the foundation for a true and secure understanding of mathematical concepts that children can apply flexibly and fluently.
We proudly follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which supports a mastery curriculum rooted in world-class research. This approach helps us foster a culture of high expectations, deep understanding, and real enjoyment of maths. Our teaching empowers pupils to break down complex problems into manageable steps, apply prior knowledge, and achieve success across all areas of the subject.
To support our youngest learners in KS1, we use Numbots, a fun and effective platform that strengthens number sense and mental fluency. For multiplication mastery, all pupils have access to Times Tables Rock Stars, an engaging and competitive tool that builds speed, accuracy, and confidence both in school and at home.
We aim to instil a lifelong love of the subject and equip every child with the mathematical skills they need to flourish now and in the future.
